Liverpool recover from poor 1st half to defeat Cardiff

Today Liverpool took on a depleted Cardiff ,who handed debuts to 2 19 year olds, and defeated them 3-1

The first half was played at a slow pace with half chances being the only actions to call home about.

Roberto Firminio did have the ball in the net in the 9th minute but his goal was correctly adjudged to be offside.

Other then that both teams were disappointing when it came to finding the end product with both teams only having 1 weak effort on target each

The game came to life in the second half when with the first kick of the half Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher came charging out the area and brought the player down. After a lengthy VAR review the referee brandished a yellow card and awarded a free kick.

Liverpool notched it up a gear and deservedly took the lead in the 53rd minute when a cross into the box was met by international nations cup winner Diogo Jota who glanced the ball out of the reach of Dillon Phillips in the Cardiff goal

After the first goal it was one way traffic towards the visitors goal and they almost doubled there advantage when Firminio headed straight at Phillips.

Moments after Jota hit a acrobatic shot narrowly wide.

There lead was doubled in the 68th minute when new signing Luiz Diaz swung a cross in which was directed into the net by Asian cup finalist Takumi Minamino.

15 minutes until full time an iconic goal was scored when the ball was given to home grown talent Harvey Elliot who took a touch to kill the ball and then poked it home. This was very important for the youngster who was making his first appearance after getting injured 4 months ago.

Cardiff gave themselves a small chance at a comeback when 19 year old Ruben Colwill smashed the ball home. It was not to be though as Liverpool held on to earn themselves a home tie with Norwich city in the next round
