Shrewsbury maintain 13 year unbeaten record against lower opposition
Tonight the 9th of August Shrewsbury took on Carlisle in the Carabou cup having recently met in December in the Fa Cup. This time there was a homecoming for former Shrewsbury manager Paul Simpson who helped steer the visitors to safety last season.
Within 4 minutes Carlisle appealed for a penalty when Jayden Harris went down near Matthew Pennington only for the referee to correctly award a goal kick to the hosts.
Shrewsburys first attempt of the game came when Jordan Shipley played a cross into Tom Flanagan who’s shot from a tight angle was comfortably claimed by Tomas Holy.
Carlisle took the lead in the 13th minute when a Sonny Hilton cross was played into new signing Ryan Edmondson who comfortably stroked home to score his first competitive goal.
Shrewsbury looked to respond when Luke Leahy received the ball in the box and released a shot that was saved by Holy on the stretch.
Shrewsbury kept knocking on the door when Matthew Pennington unleashed a volley on the edge of the box that had to be tipped wide by the alert Holy.
The Blues reminded Shrewsbury of there threat at goal when Omari Patrick was unleashed to hit a shot which was palmed clear by Marko Marosi.
The salop equalised just before half time when captain Luke Leahy angled a free kick that clipped the bar and nestled into the net to send the sides into half time level.
The second half had a slow start with the first small chance of the half going to Rekeil Pyke who’s shot took a deflection which looped onto the roof of the net.
Shrewsbury showed there strength when Tom Bayliss took on a shot that glided wide.
Carlisle also kept pressuring when Jack stretto’s glanced a header wide via a deflection from the corner Corey Whelan headed his shot over the bar.
Shrewsbury eventually took the lead when Daniel Udoh received the ball in the box spun and dispatched the ball past Holy to open his account for the season.
Carlisle equalised when a long ball was played in to substitute Kristian Dennis who slotted it home despite the best efforts of Marosi to maintain Dennis’s run of scoring a goal each game this season.
The scores were not level for long when 3 minutes later a cross came in to new signing Chey Dunckley who controlled the ball then steered it past Holy to open Dunckley’s account for the Salop.
